Director and animator LU GUARNIER died on December 29 at the age of ninety-three.
Guarnier started at Bob Clampett's Warner Bros. unit in 1937. For most of his career, he animated in New York at such studios as UPA-NY and John and Faith Hubley's Storyboard Productions.
In the 1960s, Guarnier directed "Tennessee Tuxedo And His Tales" for Total Television, combining the characters Tennessee Tuxedo, the King and Odie, The Hunter, Tooter Turtle and The World of Commander McBragg. It was the first TV cartoon series to combine entertainment and education. At UPA, he animated 1959's Terror Faces Magoo, the last theatrical Mr. Magoo release.
He was sometimes credited under his real name of Lucifer Guarnier; he said that his father took great pleasure in naming him. He received the Animation Guild Golden Award in 1987.
